How It Was Because

…or, ‘history for fun’. Join me as I explore all manner of Old Things, with the occasional diversion into other subjects – we’ll see how we go. Why the name ‘How It Was Because’, you ask? It’s what we try and figure out when we learn about the past: what it was like, how did things happen (‘how it was’), and why this was the case (‘because’). Also it sounds catchy.

Welcome to ‘How It Was Because’! I’m Emily, and learning about how things were, and why, is one of my favourite things in life. I have a PhD in History, but love learning about the past for fun as well as professionally. I come from the wild wet British Columbia coast, but have lived in York, England, since 2010. I look forward to sharing on this blog some of the things I’ve learned about York, starting with flax mills, vanished churches, and old maps. We’ll see where we go from there!
